Prayer for the Day: God of grace and love, we stand in awe of your holy will that makes us equal in your sight. Amen.

Day 186

Matred

Genesis 36:39

After Baal-hanan, Achbor’s son, died, Hadar became king; his city’s name was Pau and his wife’s name was Mehetabel the daughter of Matred and granddaughter of Me-zahab.

Matred earned a place in the royal line as the mother-in-law of King Hadar, one of the last kings of Edom. So little is known of her beyond the name of the city and the time in which she lived that in the records noted in the ancient Greek translation of Genesis she was listed as male. Of course she is not around to be concerned by that misrepresentation, but I found myself irritated on her behalf, perhaps because I am always peeved when someone in a telephone solicitation addresses me as Sir. That usually earns them a speedy good-bye.

What that misrepresentation hammers home is the low place in the hierarchy that is occupied by women, even in this postmodern society of the twenty-first century. Sadly, we continue to struggle for the full rights of women, and despite the gains that have been made, too many of us are made invisible and thus valueless, unless we are connected directly to a man.

We are more than the persons, men or women, to whom we are connected or with whom we are associated. We are individuals of sacred worth and we can and must celebrate our individuality even as we appreciate the community of men and women, family and friends of which we are a part.
